Serial rapist-killer Jaishankar's escape tale still a mystery

The Times of India

September 9, 2013

BANGALORE: A week after he escaped from prison and three days after he was arrested, police are still in the dark over how serial rapist-killer Jaishankar, alias M Shankar, 36, scaled the walls of Parappana Agrahara Central Jail.

Sources told TOI that Jaishankar was not remanded to police custody on two counts: he was not medically fit to undergo interrogation, and escaping from jail is a minor offence.

Investigation officers said when he was arrested, there were wounds on his feet, his knees were swollen and he complained of back pain.

Jaishankar had escaped from Parappana Agrahara jail last Sunday after using duplicate keys and scaling two walls. There were reports on an insider role in the escape. He was trapped by police on Thursday night.

Addressing the media following the arrest, city police commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar had said more details on how he managed the escape will come out once they interrogate him.

After being remanded to judicial custody, Jaishankar has not returned to jail but has been admitted to Victoria Hospital for medical treatment.

"We'll protest this decision and take legal course to obtain his custody," said Kamal Pant, additional commissioner of police, law and order. "We're yet to conduct a detailed interrogation and are expecting some answers on how he managed the escape."

The commissioner also said police had not completely believed his version of the escape as it was contradictory. But with police custody denied, answers to these questions will be delayed.

Serial rapist-killer Jaishankar planned escape over two months

The Times of India

BANGALORE: The city police commissioner put his engineering background to good use when he drew the escape route of serial rapist-killer Jaishankar alias M Shankar, 36, from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. Jaishankar had planned his escape for two months.

"He had a duplicate key to the hospital cell where he was locked up. He had noticed that guards came to inspect his cell every half hour and knew he had this 30-minute window to escape," the commissioner said.

Once a round of inspection was over past Saturday midnight, Jaishankar opened his cell door with a duplicate key and went to the ground floor, where some high-profile convicts like Abdul Nasser Madani had been lodged. To his good fortune, prison guards were careless and left open two gates leading from the hospital to the garden. He scaled a 20-foot wall, then walked atop a 15-foot wall and then scaled the 30-foot high wall.

Auradkar said it's still not clear if he used a steel pole or the gate to scale the first 20-foot wall.

ADGP (Prisons) KV Gagandeep said Jaishankar had used a duplicate key to get out of the cell. "The cell lock was reachable by hand. The key could have been made by him or with the help of someone. We'll wait for the inquiry report to confirm it. We recovered the key from the garden and on inspection, found that you can only open the lock with the key but not close it. "

BK Singh, head of the special investigation teams formed to nab Jaishankar, said on reaching the peripheral wall, he used a belt and a bedsheet stolen from the hospital to lower himself. "His idea was to come down halfway and push himself away from the wall and land on the muddy terrain near the wall. He landed on his back and that explains his backache. We suspect the blood spots found near the wall are from his wounds," he said.

Gagandeep explained that it was not a power cut but the electric fencing itself that wasn't functional that night. "We had one officer of an ASP rank in-charge of this infrastructure and he didn't check the system and report it to us. He is under suspension now," he said.

Police press panic button following escape of maniac Jaishankar from Parappana Agrahara central prison.

Serial rapist-cum-killer Jaishankar’s escape from the Parappana Agrahara jail has added panic to the embarrassment suffered by state police, who now fear that the sex maniac on the loose could target lonely women.

The police have issued red alert to all the police stations across the state, directing them to take possible preventive measures by safeguarding women at lonely and isolated places. Jaishankar’s crime history reveals that he enjoyed raping and torturing women. He even confessed to torturing women before physically abusing them.

Senior police officers expressed their apprehension that Jaishankar could even be holed up in the state capital, and they have urged working women and those who travel alone at isolated places to be careful.

Jaishankar always carried a black hand bag with him. He trapped sex workers near dhabhas on highways, and killed many of them brutally, after having sex with them. Besides, he targeted women in farm houses. He kept a machete in his bag and killed whoever resisted him.

Jaishankar also abducted, raped and killed women in rural areas. As many as 12 cases of rape and murder, and seven rape cases have been lodged against him in Tamil Nadu alone. He had also kidnapped Jayamani, 39, a woman police constable on duty near Perumallur, raped her several times and killed her. Though the incident took place in August 2009, the police recovered her body only a month later.

It was another month before the Tamil Nadu police arrested Jaishankar in October 2009. He managed to give them the slip on March 17, 2011, as he was being taken to the court.

Jaishankar was rearrested near Jhalki checkpost in Bijapur district on May 5, 2011. He was subsequently lodged in Parappana Agrahara jail, till he escaped in the early hours of Sunday.

Retired superintendent of the central prison, Lakshminarayana, held senior officers of the jail directly responsible for the escape.

“I had warned them about Jaishankar coming out of his cell too often. The staff neglected my warnings and this led to his escape,” he explained.
